PhD in Political Science

The PhD programme at the Department of Political Science is designed for individuals with a deep interest in the study of power, governance, political behaviour, and institutional dynamics at local, national, and global levels. Scholars can engage with a wide range of themes including political theory, political philosophy, public administration, comparative politics, public policy, international relations, gender, governance and development, and electoral studies. The programme encourages rigorous methodological training in both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, enabling candidates to undertake original and impactful scholarship. Faculty advisors with diverse expertise spanning areas such as political philosophy, state politics in India, International relations, public administration and public policy provide close mentorship to guide research design, analysis, and publication. Through a combination of advanced coursework, independent research, and scholarly engagement, the programme prepares graduates to contribute to academic debates, inform policymaking, and shape public discourse on pressing political issues.

Eligibility

Candidates with a Master’s degree in Political Science/Public Administration/Public Policy/International Relations (55% marks and above) and a valid UGC-NET or GATE certificate can apply for a direct interview. Other candidates will have to appear for an Entrance Test and Interview.

Highlights of the Programme

  • PhD Fellowship is for up to four years (Three years and an extension of up to one more year based on performance)
  • Scholars will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 36,000/- per month as JRF for the first two years
  • Scholars will receive a monthly fellowship of Rs. 41,000/- per month as SRF for the subsequent period (only if the candidate publishes two Research Papers in Q1 / Q2 category of journals in the first two years)
  • Scholars will be eligible for the Professional Development Grant of Rs 20,000/- (per annum) for the first two years and Rs 30,000/- (per annum) for the subsequent duration to carry out research activities, attend conferences, purchase consumables, etc.
